Man accused of killing his girlfriend in 2023 case

Phoenix Police say they have arrested a man for his alleged role in the shooting death of his girlfriend three years ago.

PHOENIX - Phoenix Police say they have arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a shooting over three years ago that left a woman dead.

What we know:

In a statement released on April 2, Phoenix Police said they arrested Andre Jermaine Gentry Nicholes in connection with the case.

The backstory:

Investigators said the officers were called to Steele Indian School Park at around 11:00 p.m. on Feb. 5, 2023 for an injured person call.

"When officers arrived, they located an adult female, identified as 29-year-old Karissa Danyelle Hamilton, with a gunshot wound," Phoenix Police wrote. "The Phoenix Fire Department arrived on scene and pronounced Hamilton deceased."

"Karissa was very kind and humble. She liked doing things for people, but she always did it in the background where she didn't expect any recognition," said the victim's mother, Sylvia Hamilton, during a news conference on Nov. 8, 2023. "She was a really good person, she had a good soul. We don't know who could have done this."

Dig deeper:

Police say officers working a separate investigation arrested Nicholes, and that during an interview, Nicholes was questioned about Hamilton's murder.

"Nicholes made statements linking himself to the homicide," read a portion of the statement. "Detectives learned Nicholes was the boyfriend of the victim at the time of the incident."

What's next:

Phoenix Police say Nicholes was "booked on multiple charges related to the separate investigation along with charges related to the homicide."

"Additional details related to this incident remain part of the ongoing investigation," officials wrote.
