Armed suspect wearing ballistic vest shot and killed by Gilbert Police, department says
GILBERT, Ariz. - A man who was reportedly wearing a ballistic vest and was armed with two guns was shot and killed by Gilbert Police on Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened near Greenfield and Knox roads, the department said, around 2 p.m. on Jan. 21. Officers were searching the area after callers reported seeing someone who was armed.
Initially, they didn't find the suspect, but eventually, he was spotted inside a car in a nearby residential neighborhood.
When the suspect got out of his car, police say he was armed with a handgun and a rifle. He was reportedly wearing a ballistic vest.
"He started approaching the officers and officers then went ahead and provided commands, and he did not listen to the commands and the officers responded to the threat. The suspect was shot and was pronounced deceased on scene," police said.
The suspect was identified as 40-year-old Brett Shanahan.
No officers were injured.
This was an isolated incident, police say, and the investigation is ongoing.
