Two sisters with one unbreakable bond.

"That's amazing what her sister did," Simone Netherlands said. "She did not leave her sister's side. She tried to get her body in the way so that the baby wouldn't float away."

Two horses found themselves stranded after wandering into what turned into an overnight rescue mission.

SRP guards were the first to notice the two stallions stuck in the canal off the Loop 202 and Thomas and Higley Roads.

That's when they immediately called the Salt River Wild Horse Management group and local firefighters.

"They were really drowning," Netherlands said. "They had been swimming against the stream for like two hours and even though they're Salt River wild horses, they were getting really exhausted."

At one point, the two horses floated to a deep end of the canal, where they began to drown, and with each wild horse weighing up to 1,000 pounds, that made the operation even more difficult for rescuers and technical crews.

"They really weren't going to last that much longer, so at that point, firefighters really jumped into action and used some ropes and I think it was literally like 12 or 13 firefighters that pulled them out," Netherlands said.

After rescue crews pulled the sisters to safety, the Salt River Management Group took the horses to a safe location where big and little sister can now rest and recover.

"The younger one does have some wounds and it does look a little bit bloody, but hopefully it's superficial and so we're going to give her some antibiotics and some pain meds and let's just hope that they're going to be OK," Netherlands said.
