Gun exchange in Surprise turns violent when shooting breaks out

A gun exchange turned violent in Surprise, leaving a 16-year-old boy recovering after being shot on Jan. 6.

The Surprise Police Department says the boy was shot around 11 p.m. near 140th Avenue and Greenway Road.

"Through their investigation, including witness interviews and video evidence from nearby homes, officers learned two groups of males had met to trade firearms. During the trade, an exchange of gunfire occurred. A 16-year-old male was struck by gunfire and was transported to a local hospital prior to officers arriving. He remains there in serious but stable condition," the police department said.

Osvaldo Javier Rojas, 21, was named as a suspect in the shooting, and he was arrested. Rojas is accused of armed robbery, aggravated assault and discharging a firearm within city limits.

A second person, Kevin Schwahn, 19, was arrested and is accused of hindering prosecution.

The investigation is ongoing.
