Fortnite players to receive refunds—here’s how to submit a claim

The Federal Trade Commission has begun issuing refunds to Fortnite video game players who were charged for unwanted purchases while playing the game.

The refunds total $126 million.

The commission is also reopening the window to allow impacted players to submit a claim to request a refund if they haven't already.

Fortnite customers ‘tricked’ into unwanted purchases 

The backstory:

The FTC alleged the video game giant, Epic Games, used deceptive online design tactics to trick Fortnite players, including children, into making unintended purchases "based on the press of a single button."

Consumers could be charged while doing something as simple as attempting the wake the game from sleep mode, for example, or by pressing a nearby button when trying to preview an item, the agency said.

The FTC also accused Epic of blocking some users who disputed the charges from accessing the content they purchased.

What's next:

For customers who previously submitted claims, the FTC said will send 969,173 checks and PayPal payments on June 25 and June 26 to consumers who filed a valid claim.

Consumers chose their payment method when completing the claim form. Those receiving checks should cash them within 90 days, as noted on the check. PayPal recipients must redeem their payments within 30 days, the FTC said.
