PHOENIX (KSAZ) - As police look for a suspect in connection with the death of a 77-year-old pedestrian in the Valley, the victim's family is demanding change.
"They have to do something with this intersection," said Felipe Duarte.
Since the Duartes moved into their home, there has been two fatal accidents along a dangerous corridoe on 43rd Avenue.
Felipe Duarte's father, Ignacio Duarte-Rodriguez, was the victim in a third incident, and Felipe has had enough.
"I don't want no more accidents here, so maybe the city can work on the crosswalk here," said Duarte.
"A crosswalk, you know, something. A light, something, so that people could cross safer," said Constantino Escarcega.
There are no lined crosswalks, no white lines for stop signs, and no signs of anyone slowing down on 43rd Avenue. Witnesses say the driver took off in a Chevrolet Malibu, after striking a man that just wanted to grab cigarettes across the street.
The Duarte family's patriarch may be gone, but they're hopeful that the family concerns are not forgotten, and that the mission of Ignacio's son can be pushed forward.
"If his dad would be the last of this, I think that would be something that he would be proud of," said Escarcega.
