Driver & dog killed in Ahwatukee crash, driver ID'd

Police have identified the truck driver who was killed in a crash that shut down a major Phoenix roadway overnight. The driver's dog also died in the crash.

Phoenix Police responded to the accident at 48th Street & Elliot at about 8 p.m., on Saturday after receiving several 911 calls. Officers say the driver, now identified as 47-year-old David Delair, was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed. Police say the vehicle veered off of the side and crashed into a tree. Witnesses say they say debris and dirt everywhere.

Several people on-scene tried to help the truck driver, but he was pronounced dead. Despite efforts to save the dog, the animal did not survive either.

Police say it appears the driver may have intentionally driven off the road.
