PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The City of Phoenix may still have some growing up to do, but when it comes to nightlife in the city bars, lounges, and nightclubs are found in places that were empty just a few years ago.
Roosevelt Row and the Cityscape Complex are just a couple of examples.
Now a cultural epicenter, Phoenix is expanding its art, music, and club scene, but downtown Phoenix hasn't always had that reputation.
FOX 10 went on a tour of the hottest and most hidden spots in town to show you how Phoenix is on the rise.
First stop is Melinda's Alley, a new underground lounge and although hidden, it's very much the place to see and be seen.
"You don't have to come in and feel like the bartenders are pretentious, or that we don't care. We walk you through the menu, there're only six cocktails, it's a great environment and great music," said Dustin Mark Bolin.
Next up it is "Game On" at the Cobra Arcade Bar to catch up with some old friends like Donkey Kong and Princess Peach. Where some old games are set to new school tunes.
But if you're looking to capture some memories head over to Hannys, which was constructed in 1947. The bar/restaurant goes new age offering picture perfect lighting with it's selfie wall.
"There's so much that's going on right now that's making Phoenix coming up and doing big things, and I'm really impressed and proud of now saying that I'm from Phoenix," said Sophia Idowu.
While some enjoy striking a pose upstairs, art imitates life downstairs, with some playfully devious porcelain dolls.
The creative culture continues over at the Crescent Ballroom; the brick-walled former garage noted for its eclectic crowd and concerts.
"They love the art but at the same time it's building up more and more of the music, and that's what we want," said Georgie Rodriguez.
An even though downtown has faced it's share of critics in the past.
"When I first moved down here, nobody wanted to come visit me, they were scared, and finally all the galleries started popping up and restaurants over the years, First Fridays so, it's been really nice to see," said Tondra.
The new reviews are in, and this crowd cannot wait for an encore.
"Downtown Phoenix will always be like the authentic, best place to be, just because there's so much diversity and there's something for everyone," said Noel.
There are many more cool spots to discover, Valley Bar is a must, but the owner says you have to come and experience it for yourself.
