PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- There are new details surrounding a sexual assault investigation involving a woman being cared for at Hacienda HealthCare.
On Monday, FOX 10 reported that two of the doctors who treated the victim no longer work at the facility, with one of the doctors suspended and the other resigning. Hacienda officials did not name the doctors involved.
Phoenix Police have neither confirmed nor denied whether detectives collected DNA from the two male doctors who treated the victim while she was at the facility. FOX 10, however, has learned that one of the victim's doctors is a longtime pediatrician in Phoenix who has been reprimanded by the Arizona Medical Board, following the death of an infant patient.
Dr. Phillip Gear has been treating children in Phoenix for more than 30 years. Dr. Gear runs "Just For Kids Pediatrics", and its website confirms Gear is also affiliated with Hacienda HealthCare. Dr. Gear s also one of the doctors who treated the victim.
According to court records, Dr. Gear last checked the victim in April 2018, and did not note any major changes in her condition. Records show Dr. Gear only performed an external exam.
Eight months later, on December 29, 2018, the victim unexpectedly gave birth to a baby boy.
The victim's caregivers claim they had no idea she was even pregnant, and the timing of the baby's birth suggests the victim may have been a few weeks pregnant when Dr. Gear examined her.
FOX 10 has contacted the number for Dr. Gear listed in the victim's medical records. A staff member told FOX 10 that "he has no comment at this time."
This isn't the first time Dr. Gear has been suspected of negligence regarding one of his patients. In 2001, the Arizona Medical Board reprimanded gear for failing to perform a rectal exam on an infant under his care, who later died. The board said Dr. Gear's conduct constituted negligence resulting in the baby's death.
According to court records, the victim's condition includes severe brain damage, seizure disorder, and psychomotor retardation. She's been in a vegetative state for 26 years.
The man who raped and impregnated her has not been identified, and police say "there is a very wide scope of who were are gathering dna evidence from."
