Four-year-old boy dead after 3-car crash on I-10 in Phoenix
PHOENIX - The Arizona Dept. of Public Safety says a child has died following a crash that involved three cars on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 6.
What we know:
DPS received several calls at around 11:20 a.m. for reports of a three-car crash near I-10 East and 43rd Avenue.
"Our preliminary investigation indicates a Dodge Challenger struck the rear of a Toyota Corolla which had slowed for traffic. That vehicle in turn struck the rear of a Chrysler Pacifica," DPS said.
Dig deeper:
DPS says a four-year-old and a two-year-old were in the back seat of the Toyota when the crash happened. The kids were identified as boys, DPS says, adding that the two-year-old was in a car seat and the four-year-old was in a booster seat.
"Two small children ages four and two were seat-belted into the back seat of the Toyota. The four-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital where the child was pronounced deceased. The two-year-old was transported to another hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The adult female driver of the Toyota who is the mother of the children did not sustain injuries," DPS wrote.
Two other people, identified as a passenger in the Chrysler and the driver of the Dodge, also suffered minor injuries.
"We'll look at all kinds of factors in terms of what occurred, how fast he was going, whether impairment is a factor. We are not 100% positive at this point, but it's early in the investigation," DPS said.
What we don't know:
Police did not identify any of the victims, nor did they identify the driver allegedly responsible.
