CHANDLER, Ariz. (FOX 10) - A fourth-grader in Chandler says a man approached her while she was walking to school and grabbed her. Now, police are trying to track down the man who did this.
Thursday, just after 7 a.m., a fourth-grade student walking to Sirrine Elementary School near Arizona Ave. and Warner ran inside and told the staff a man tried to grab her. She said the man grabbed her arm but she was able to get away. The man didn't say anything but is said to have smelled like alcohol.
"I've lived here for a year and I've only seen the neighborhood turn around for the better," said Chris, a resident in the neighborhood. "This is the first time I've heard of something like this."
Chris, who has two children who go to the school, says he was worried yesterday when he saw so many police officers near the school.
"I dropped my daughter and son off at school the same day this happened I saw all the police presence and I didn't know what it was about," Chris said. "I posted on Facebook and people were actually really concerned because I have a lot of friends on social media who live in this area as well, and people wanted to know what was going on."
Chandler police have released a sketch of a suspect wanted in connection to the attempted kidnapping of a young girl.
The suspect is described as being a tall white man in his 20s. He was wearing a black long sleeve Adidas shirt, black pants, and grey shoes. Chris already does take precautions, but he says he'll be keeping an eye out.
"When I dropped my kids off in the morning, I actually stop and watch them go into the gate," Chris said. "And once they're inside the school and [are] secure, then I leave."
