What is Bravecto Quantum? FDA approves 12-month flea and tick treatment

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a first of its kind, once-yearly shot designed to protect dogs from fleas and ticks for up to a year.

Bravecto Quantum can be used for treating and preventing flea and tick infestations of black-legged ticks, American dog tick and brown dog ticks for 12 months and for combatting lone star tick infestations for 8 months in eligible dogs.

The injection is manufactured by Merck Animal Health and will be available for dogs 6 months and older.

How does Bravecto Quantum work?

The backstory:

Fluralaner, the active ingredient in Bravecto Quantum, belongs to a class of antiparasitic drugs called isoxazolines, the FDA says. Isoxazolines target the nervous systems of insects and parasites, according to Merck Animal Health. Eventually, parasites who bite the dog will become paralyzed and die.

There are several isoxazolines on the market for flea and tick prevention, but they generally only protect dogs for a month.

Dig deeper:

The FDA says isoxazoline products are commonly used and "safe for most dogs and cats," but the products have been linked to neurologic adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures in some dogs and cats.

"Pet owners should consult with a veterinarian to determine whether a product in the isoxazoline class is appropriate for their pet," the FDA says.

The injection must be prescribed and administered by a veterinarian, who will determine whether the dog should take an 8-month shot or a 12-month shot.

What they're saying:

A Merck spokesperson said the drug’s approval "sets a new standard in pet care by providing veterinarians and pet parents with a safe and effective option when it comes to flea and tick protection for dogs."
