Mesa Police say Mesa Community College was put on lockdown due to an incident in the area on Thursday. It also said Banner Desert Medical Center nearby was on lockdown, but the hospital says it never was.

Mesa Community College said its campus at Southern Avenue and Dobson is no longer under lockdown on Thursday.

The community college was put on lockdown on the afternoon of Dec. 5.

Mesa Police say the community college briefly initiated the lockdown out of an abundance of caution amid an incident nearby.

"An altercation reportedly occurred between a male and a female at a separate location in Mesa. Following the altercation, the female left the area with another male in a vehicle. The male involved chased their vehicle onto the freeway at a high rate of speed," read a portion of Mesa Police's statement. "Both vehicles exited westbound at Dobson, where the female’s vehicle failed to navigate the turn, resulting in a collision. Witnesses reported that the male exited his vehicle, approached the female and the second male, and assaulted both before leaving the scene in an unknown direction."

While Mesa Police said both MCC and Banner Desert Hospital were on lockdown, officials with Banner said their hospital in the area was never placed on lockdown. Their security staff on-site, however, were made aware of the incident.

An investigation remains ongoing.
