7-year-old boy critically injured in hit-and-run; suspect arrested

A 7-year-old boy is in extremely critical condition following a hit-and-run in Mesa.

The Mesa Police Department says the boy is in extremely critical condition after being struck by a vehicle near Broadway Road and 56th Street on Wednesday morning. Following the collision, the driver of the vehicle, an adult female, left the scene but has since been located and was questioned by police.

The driver has been identified as Maria De Jesus Cabrera Davila. She was arrested and booked for failure to remain at the scene of a serious injury collision, a class 3 felony.

"Based on her statements, Davila was aware that he hit the child and fled the scene. After speaking to a family member, she was returning to the scene when she was contacted and detained. Impairment does not appear to be a factor in this case," stated MPD's Steve Berry.

According to court paperwork, Davila holds an Arizona learners permit and had no licensed driver in the vehicle with her.

Firefighters say the boy was transported to a nearby trauma center.
