2 DPS troopers, 3 children seriously injured in crash

Two Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers and three children have been injured in a multi-vehicle crash near Interstate 17 in Phoenix.

The Phoenix Fire Department says two DPS troopers and five others, including three children between the ages 2 and 5, have been transported to nearby hospitals.

The two DPS troopers, according to officials, were on their way to provide backup on a call. They were going east on Bethany Home Road, and had a red light as they drove into the intersection. Meanwhile, an SUV was exiting the freeway, headed north, and had the green light.

The troopersare in stable condition and are expected to be released from the hospital later today. The conditions of the other patients are unknown.

Bethany Home Road has reopened in both directions at I-17.

According to DPS officials, one of the troopers was a trainee who just got out of the academy. A veteran trooper was reportedly trapped inside the vehicle, and had to be extricated. DPS is investigating the crash.
