Shooting that injured 2 kids left Chandler neighborhood stunned
The suspect in the incident, identified by police as 52-year-old Derek Tighe, allegedly shot his two children at a home in Chandler. The man was not supposed to be at the home, according to officials, because of previous incidents of domestic violence. FOX 10's Lauren Clark reports.
CHANDLER, Ariz. - Police are investigating after a man reportedly shot his two children near Alma School and Queen Creek roads on Saturday.
An investigation revealed that the mother had been home with the kids when their father, who does not live there, showed up unannounced.
"A domestic violence incident occurred after he arrived, which resulted in the father shooting the two juveniles before taking his own life," said Sgt. Jason McClimans in a statement.
The two juveniles were hospitalized in critical condition, but are expected to survive.
The father was identified as 52-year-old Derek Tighe. He was not allowed to be at the home because of a history of domestic violence against the mother.
The mother was not hurt during the shooting. No other information was released.
Incident shocks area residents
News of the horrific crime is sending shockwaves through the normally quiet Chandler neighborhood.
"I left 40 minutes before it happened," said Shize Yang, who lives in the area. "If I happened to meet with him on the street, it could have been a disaster."
Yang said the family moved into the neighborhood about six to eight months ago.
"I didn't see them often," said Yang. "Just saw the car come in and out of the driveway."
"When we go to calls like this with children, especially when it involves their own father hurting them, it's difficult on all first responders," said Sgt. Jason McClimans with the Chandler Police Department. "With the incident that happened in Phoenix in the last couple days, and now this incident, I mean, everyone should be hugging their children right now."
