CHANDLER, Ariz. (FOX 10) - Maricopa County health officials have confirmed two cases of mumps, with one being at Hamilton High School in Chandler.
According to Maricopa County Public Health, the confirmed cases include a Hamilton High School student and another person known to the student who is not a staff member at the high school.
Health officials advise parents to be aware of the signs and symptoms of mumps, which the CDC says includes fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite. Other symptoms include painfully swollen salivary glands that can cause puffy cheeks. Most people recover within weeks. Outbreaks are rare.
Mumps is contagious and spreads through coughing and sneezing.
The mumps vaccine is part of routine childhood shots.
