Peoria power outages: Nearly 900 customers without electricity for most of the day

PEORIA, Ariz. -- It was a dreary day to be without power. Nearly 900 people had no electricity for much of the day near 87th Avenue and Mountain View.

The power went out at about 5:15 a.m. on Wednesday after a vehicle crashed into some power equipment called a switching cabinet, surprising people in the neighborhood that were just waking up and starting their day.

Repair crews quickly went to work, but replacing a switching cabinet takes time -- and time is your enemy if you're out of power.

Resourceful neighbors brought in generators for temporary power and they were grateful the temperatures were down, as that made things a bit more bearable.

Arizona Public Service says its equipment is frequently damaged by drivers -- 310 times last year, and so far, on pace to beat that number this year. They ask everyone to drive carefully so the power doesn't get knocked out.
