Measles outbreak: CDC says you may need booster shot

PHOENIX (FOX 10) - According to a new report from the CDC, if you received the MMR vaccine between 1963 and 1989, you may need to be re-vaccinated.

During that time, many adults only received one dose and should consider getting a second.

"If they've been overseas, if they have been in contact with some of the communities which are seeing an outbreak, yes, they should be concerned about measles," Dr. Mandeep Rai said.

Dr. Rai says sometimes the symptoms can be delayed, so make sure you're aware of what's normal and what seems unusual.

"Generally, measles presents with a cough, a cold, a little bit of drainage from the eyes and the rash might take a few days to come," Dr. Rai said.

Last week, the Arizona Department of Health Services issued a report warning that a higher rate of exemptions from vaccines is putting the state at risk for an outbreak of an infectious disease like measles.

"Most of us have never seen a case of measles, so it's not the first thing we think of, but yes, we all need to be thinking about it more," Dr. Rai said.
