Reports: Former AZ Attorney General Grant Woods may run for Senate in 2020 as a Democrat

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- FOX 10 has learned that Former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods may run for the Senate in 2020, as a Democrat.

According to a report by the Washington Post Tuesday, Woods has spoken to several Democratic Senators about the idea, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. Woods himself retweeted the article, on his unverified Twitter page.

Earlier on Tuesday, Woods confirmed the reports with FOX 10's Kari Lake.

According to historical data from the Arizona Secretary of State's office, Woods was first elected as the state's Attorney General in 1990. The Republican was re-elected in 1994. Woods did not run for re-election in 1998. That year, Democrat Janet Napolitano won election to the seat.

In 2020, Arizonans will vote for a new senator, following the death of longtime senator John McCain from brain cancer in late August 2018.
