12 inmates and 1 guard injured in prison riot at Red Rock Correctional Center

ELOY, Ariz. (KSAZ) - CoreCivic officials say 12 inmates at a private southern Arizona prison and at least one guard have been injured during an apparent riot.

A spokesman for Nashville, Tennessee-based CoreCivic, which operates Red Rock Correctional Facility in Eloy, Arizona, said "an inmate-on-inmate disturbance" began on Sunday morning.

CoreCivic spokesman Jonathan Burns says twelve inmates were transported to outside medical facilities for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He says one CoreCivic staff member was treated and released from a local hospital for minor injuries.

Police say there have been inmate on inmate assaults, as well as inmate on staff assaults. Several people have been flown out on medical helicopters to hospitals.

Burns says all inmates and staff are accounted and the facility has been secured.

Arizona Department of Corrections staff and local law enforcement are reviewing and investigating the prison disturbance.

For a short time, Eloy Police were on scene to maintain the outer perimeter of the prison and to support Eloy Fire Paramedics as they attended to injured people.

Also, police responded to inform the public that visitation was canceled for the day and to assist with traffic control outside of the facility.

Eloy Police does not have any details on persons injured or specifics on the situation.
