3 killed in wrong-way crash on SR 87 near Fountain Hills, DPS says
MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. - A wrong-way crash on SR 87 near Fountain Hills left three dead, Arizona DPS said on Sunday.
The two-car crash happened on the highway near milepost 187, or by the Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct, on May 26 around 5 a.m.
All three people who died, DPS says, were inside the same car. Their identities weren't released.
DPS didn't say what led up to the crash, but that impairment hasn't been ruled out as a factor.
Roads have reopened.
‘It’s tragic'
Neighbors say they're not surprised to see another crash on SR 87.
"Honestly, it sounds like a racetrack. I'm not even kidding," said Maura, a Fountain Hills resident.
Neighbors say speeding and reckless driving is too regular on the highway.
"It’s tragic any time. But the fact that it's Memorial Day weekend, you know, when we want people to relax, have fun, we also want people to remain safe," said Warren Trent, Arizona DPS spokesperson.
Fountain Hills neighbors are disheartened, but not surprised to see more lives claimed on SR 87.
"I think they used to call it Bloodbath Highway back many years ago," Maura said.
